Support for Schools and Play and Youth settings
We support the NHSS (National Healthy Schools Standard) in Portsmouth, by offering workshops, support and training around a variety of health subjects. We are available to deliver practical sessions in partnership with schools and play and youth settings. We act as point of contact for further training for fellow professionals working with young people as well as engagement with parents on many health based areas including the balance of good health, this can include practical cooking sessions, demonstrations and presentations, also as focused work around alcohol, substance misuse and sex and relationships.
The team is able to assist governors to devise a whole school policy on a range of health issues and support schools in implementing any changes that may be required. Team members are also involved with the education service in tendering and setting standards for the school meals contractors.
The Food and Health Group offer a number of training packages for schools that underpin and support the work being done by
Healthy Harvey.
The team have also produced a range of resources for schools including, drug posters, smoking literature, fruit & vegetable quizzes, bingo and pictures of balanced and unbalanced lunchboxes together with a range of other leaflets and booklets. A computer game "Fruit and Veg Frenzy" has been produced in association with LimeKnight Productions.
Fit Food Fast, a recipe file with a collection of more than 100 simple, economical, healthy recipes is also available to schools who cook with their children as part of the curriculum or in out of school activities. 'Being you' a city wide campaign and accompanying teachers toolkit have been produced looking at young people's mental health issues.
HIDS is able to signpost schools to other initiatives such as "Water is Cool", "Fruit in School", "School Milk Schemes" and Growing Clubs. The team also have good links with the school nurses, looked after children,
teenage pregnancy team and
Sex Sense.
