Substance-Related Harm

HIDS Business Plan:

Outcome objective 1 - To raise levels of non-smoking and increase the number of smoke-free environments

Outcome objective 2 - To reduce the harm from substance misuse and promote sensible drinking

Reducing substance use is a key target in the Every Child Matters outcomes framework under 'Be Healthy'. Priority national targets have been set for reducing smoking, drinking, Class A drug taking and the regular use of illicit drugs, especially among the most vulnerable.

Substance-related harm has a major impact on quality of life in Portsmouth with alcohol misuse being a major cause of violent crime in the city. HIDS is at the forefront of tackling these issues by providing information and advice on all areas of substance misuse, particularly amongst young people

Substance misuse issues are looked at in many ways by HIDS but we are always looking to involve young people in their own development.
Strong links have been formed with colleges from Healthy Schools, and multi-agency projects have been developed to support their work in schools. Substance awareness training (tier 1 & 2) is available through the adolescent health training programme for all practitioners working with young people.

HIDS employs dedicated workers for young people. Working closely with agencies, projects and groups of young people from across the city, developing initiatives that enable and educate young people about alcohol misuse, the alcohol worker offers sessions about alcohol and the risks associated with it. These sessions can be targeted for a range of audiences while focusing on 4 - 19 year olds and their families. Work is carried out in schools, colleges and pupil referral units.
The substance misuse worker provides group work to pupils across the secondary schools, delivers staff/teacher training, and holds a caseload of pupils whose attendance is affected by their or their parents' use of drugs or alcohol.
A health development officer, specialising in work with young people around risk-taking behaviour, works in schools and other community settings to provide support and signposting in areas including sex and relationships and substance awareness.

HIDS is at the forefront of working with local businesses and communities to ensure a healthier environment so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from second hand smoke. We support people aiming to give up smoking. We coordinate the young person's prevention and cessation service to support young people from taking up smoking through working directly with children in schools and other youth settings.
