Falls Prevention Training

The focus of this work is to raise awareness about the risks of falling for older persons, thereby reducing the number of falls taking place, in hospital, care homes, individual homes and the community.

Falls are a major cause of disability and the leading cause of death due to injury in older people aged 75 and over. One in 3 people over the age of 65 fall each year, and in 2004, 544 older people resident in Portsmouth and East Hampshire district were admitted to hospital with a fractured hip sustained as the result of a fall. Hip fractures are not only very costly financially to both the NHS and Social Care services, but they can cause extreme disruption and distress to the individual concerned. For some it means losing their ability to live independently.

Falls awareness raising sessions are available to health, social care and voluntary agency staff, carers and groups of older persons. The aims are to enable them to identify those at risk of falling and be able to refer onto appropriate agencies for assistance.
