Falls Prevention

ONE PERSON DIES EVERY 5 HOURS AS A RESULT OF A FALL IN THE HOME!

Falls are the most common cause of accidental death among people who are over 75. Falls also cause approximately 36,000 serious injuries each year.

The cost to the NHS for people who experience falls is estimated to be £15million per annum. However the cost to the individual must also be taken into account as for many they never regain their independence and may have to rely on others in order to get through their daily activities.

It is for these reasons that Portsmouth City Council promote falls awareness and importance of maintaining independence. We do this by the following:
  • Training of health, social care and voluntary agency staff to enable them to identify those at risk of falling and refer on to appropriate agencies
  • Training for care staff to enable them to deliver exercise sessions to older people living in care settings, to build and maintain strength and mobility
  • Publicising and promoting the agencies that can assist those at risk of falling eg podiatry, voluntary agencies, community alarms and grants for heating installation.
  • Awareness raising amongst older persons to encourage them to take measures to reduce their risk of falling
  • Encouraging the development of opportunities for activity within the community, specifically for older people to improve balance, core strength, muscle tone , mobility and confidence
