Drayton and Farlington Action Group

Drayton and Farlington is situated in the far north of the city in what is perceived to be a relatively affluent area. As a result of this perception, services and community-based projects have often been focused on the heart of the city and other areas of deprivation, while many residents of Drayton and Farlington are older people with low expendable incomes facing social isolation and living in old and draughty properties.
 
Residents in the area were also increasingly concerned about a decline in local services and facilities and a lack of focus on local issues. With an increasingly ageing population it was felt that there were many local issues that needed to be addressed but they lacked a forum in which to discuss them.
 
The Drayton & Farlington Action Group started from a survey into the amenities and facilities needed by residents 55 years of age or over in Drayton and Farlington. A group of local residents came together to carry out the initial investigative work. This group, with support from Health Improvement & Development Service, then became the Drayton & Farlington Action group chaired by a local resident.
 
This group have been addressing services highlighted in the survey.

• Pedestrian crossing near Doctor's surgery.
• Cashpoint machine.
• Drop in Centre for coffee and social interaction.
• Information Centre.
• Highlighting state of local pavements.
• Formation of a Listening group dealing with loss.
• Producing a newsletter called "Your Say".

The Group has achieved the majority of the above and works closely with elected members. Membership of the Group is open to any resident of Drayton and Farlington who volunteers to help with one or other of the projects. There are 30 volunteers at present, but more would be appreciated.
